I like ghost towns.
I shared this on google+ and thought I would share it here too since I haven’t put a written post in a while. I wish I could link my public google+ shares straight to tumblr.
“I find myself evangelising #googleplus often to people because I’ve enjoyed using it and it seems like most of the world is confused about how that’s possible. I want to make sure that I say that I really do like facebook. I think it’s great for a lot of things including groups, events and timeline.
I don’t think google+ is “facebook made by google”. I don’t use it like facebook and I think the more important point I want to make is that I don’t want to use it like facebook.
In some ways I use google+ in the same way I imagine people use twitter, and definitely in the same ways I use tumblr. It lets me follow photographers, artists, coders, designers etc. that I’m interested in, without character limits. To actually start enjoying google+ I had to look for what I was interested in, in the same way I had to find what I was interested in when using tumblr. It was worth the search. To make it easier for my friends, I’ll start sharing the circles I’ve made to start you off on your search. This is the google+ that I would use with or without facebook and the one that doesn’t need my social network.
The other other use for google+ is the one that I don’t get a chance to use often enough, and the part that could be seen as competing with facebook. It’s the ability to share certain things with certain people, and have things shared with me selectively. If everyone used google+, it would still feel a lot emptier than facebook because people wouldn’t share everything with me anymore. People wouldn’t share everything with everyone. There would be a sense of privacy and that’s exactly what I want.
I wouldn’t see things that were shared with me but weren’t intended for me, and that would be amazing. I wouldn’t spend time looking through a newsfeed/stream searching for the one or two posts that I actually care about. My friends circle wouldn’t have a hundred new posts a day because my close friends don’t have that much to share with me every day. It would be emptier, and better for it.
I think facebook is really valuable. I think timeline is awesome, and there are lots of fantastic features on facebook for connecting with people you know. Facebook’s message system is a great way to talk to the people you want to talk to, and they obviously have amazing developers. I do want to say that I really do not want to be able to look at personal pictures/videos/updates that weren’t intended for me. I really just want people to be more aware of what they’re sharing with the world. I would love to join facebook’s team and improve how people share things with the world, but right now I just think the current model is fundamentally flawed.
To all my friends who I’ve made connecting with me harder because they’re used to facebook’s paradigm, I still want to stay connected. I just think I’ve found a better platform for connecting more actively instead of passively absorbing an endless stream of posts I don’t care about. I just thought it was time I made the effort. Hopefully you agree.”
